Explain:
aiosonic is a pure-asyncio HTTP client that covers HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2 and WebSocket in a single package, with connection pooling, proxy support, multipart uploads and full type annotations. It has been developed since 2019, released 1.2.0 on 2026-10-10, and is documented at https://aiosonic.readthedocs.io.
It is the HTTP backend of Datadog's official Python API client: datadog-api-client (~18M downloads/month) declares
aiosonic>=0.24.0for itsasyncextra and builds its async REST client onaiosonic.HTTPClient(rest.py).Disclosure: I am the author. Adoption is modest compared with the current entries (~740k downloads/month on pypistats, 170 GitHub stars), so I'm submitting it as a challenger and leaving the judgment to the maintainer.
Displacement
HTTP Clients → General is at its cap of 5. The section currently lists both httpx and its fork httpx2, which do the same job with the same API. Consolidating those two into one slot would free a place for an async-first alternative; aiosonic is proposed for that slot.
